RLPP Macrophyte Harvesting

The 4th annual campaign to cut and remove macrophytes (water-based vegetation) from Red Lily Pond and Lake Elizabeth will take place July 17, 18, and 19. Past campaigns have resulted in removing tons of dense vegetation from our ponds, clearing pathways for paddlers and improving habitat for fish, birds, and wildlife. The addition of Benthic Barriers covering the cut areas have extended the effectiveness of removing vegetation in the ponds.

Volunteers are desperately needed to get the job done again this year. You can work on cutting, picking, paddling, pulling, photographing, or preparing paperwork. While some of the work occurs in the water, most of it occurs above the water or on shore. Red Lily Pond Project provides tools and equipment, as well as lunch and water for all volunteers.

Show up, any time between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on July 17, 18, or 19.

Students who participate should be able to claim credit for community service hours (we will provide letters confirming your work, and photographs, as well as a description of how this work is an important element of environmentally sound fresh water management).
